A woman from Maui has won the 2015 Mrs. Hawaii pageant. Last night, Mrs. Maui Caroline Absalom took the crown of Mrs. Hawaii.

The pageant, which has been around for about four decades, took place on May 31 at the Neil S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. Contestants had to take part in a private interview with the judges, swimsuit competition and evening gown competition.

“I’m still waking up after the shock,” Absalom said. “I’m just happy that an ‘Outer Island Girl’ finally won! Maui is representing Hawaii nationally! I’m going to ask the director today when’s the last time Maui won Mrs Hawaii… I think 20 or so years? This is all so surreal.”

A few minutes later, Absalom messaged me to say that, in fact, it’s been 25 years since a woman from Maui won the pageant. “Apparently I’m the first Mrs. Maui to be crowned Mrs. Hawaii!” she said. “I mean, I’m sure people from Maui have won in the past, but I’m definitely the first ‘Mrs. Maui'”

Absalom, who grew up on Maui, works for MediSpa Maui in Kihei as well as KAOI. She’s married to longtime Maui radio personality John Absalom (Johnny A), the subject of our Memorial Day cover story a few weeks ago. Absalom was also the first runner-up in the 2014 Mrs. Hawaii pageant.

For Absalom, the next step will be the Mrs. America pageant, which will take place on Sept. 26 in Sevastopol–located in the Crimea on the Black Sea. The U.S. apparently hosted the Mrs. Russia pageant 25 years ago, and now it’s time for Russia to return the favor.
